The long Tail Theory

The long Tail theory represented by the yellow part in the graph is claimed to be introduced by Chris Anderson, who wrote an article for Wired magazine in October 2004. The long tail concept drew in part from Clay Shirky, who in February 2003 published the essay, "Power Laws, Weblogs and Inequality" that noted that a relative handful of weblogs have many links going into them but "the long tail" of millions of weblogs may have only a handful of links going into them. His theory was well accepted by the internet community. The Amazon.com used that theory to find an explanation (excuse) to their stock holders. Even that the company doesn’t make money some people still believe that it will... One of Amazon’s employee described the Long Tail as "We sold more books today that didn't sell at all yesterday than we sold today of all the books that did sell yesterday." So …what is this long tail? From that description it seems a new synthetic drug developed by the new generation of internet nerds.

However after deeply and painful research, the long tail can be finally explained. It consists of an attraction force that is known since the beginning of the humanity. This force is usually used by the females to persuade the males to do stupid thinks like… go shopping, buy new cars, get married… The long tail force was smartly used by advertising companies after the end of the 1940’s, when the bikini was discovered by the engineer Louis Reard. But the power of the long tail was really discover by the unscrupulous beers companies that use the unfair force to push their products to the poor male population….

YouTube's most wanted

If you don't have a grandfather anymore or your grandfather has not much to tell, please pay attention. One of the most popular users of YouTube is geriatric1927. This 80-year old man who's real name is Peter Oakley, was ranked # 1 in the YouTube lists with his videoblogs named: "telling it all". This fellow has very interesting stories about the war, his motorcycle, about Google taking over YouTube and much more. I would suggest to get some beers, a bag of crisps and enjoy these lessons of life of your new granddaddy. I really hope that Enrique will him invite this guy once as a guest in class.

Thank god is friday

Some people take full advantage of the weekend. Satuday morning when I was walking to the gym I met Juan Pablo on his way home. That must have been a really good party.....

1000 pageviews!!!

Coaching...

I don’t know what to say about Thursday’s Coaching session. Was it good? Was it bad? I believe that at least it generated discussion and interest amongst us. However allow me to share some thoughts.

I appreciate the concept of coaching. I believe that the pragmatic concept behind this new “fancy therapy” is very welcome and smart.

Why welcome? Because people nowadays do not have time to STOP and THINK (do you remember the purpose of the opera song that our OB professor played in class?). These coaching sessions provide a way to help people focus on very objective issues in their personal and professional lives. It is a very results-orientated process. The coach plays an impartial role during these sessions and asks you challenging questions with the intent of making you think. So, if you believe that you have the capacity to do “Coach Yourself”, you will definitely save some money!

Why smart? Going for a Coaching session is a fancy way to attract people to sit down and talk about themselves. Imagine you are having personal performance issues related with work and life balance. If you had the opportunity to address this issue by having a Coach you would probably do it without hesitating, however you probably would not start psychotherapy for this reason.

So, what is the difference between Coaching and Psychotherapy? My understanding is that their boundaries are quite blurred, both share similar techniques. However while Coaching is used for very results-oriented purposes in order to help “well-functioning” persons to reach higher levels of success, Psychotherapy generally deals with emotional or behavioral difficulties, and/or past painful situations. For example, if you have a depression you don’t start Coaching sessions, you need Psychotherapy.

Hope it helped!

Star Wars Kid

Be aware when you make a movie of yourself and be aware that if you do so , that it might end up on the Internet. Please meet Ghyslain Raza a.k.a Star Wars Kid. This high school hero filmed himself while doing some real funky ninja moves. (original video) A few guys from the same school posted the video online and a new cult hero was born. Many creative video editors took the opportunity to edit the video combining it with movie themes and other funny stuff. There really are hunderds of edits going around on the Internet. Although he is quite famous now, his parents are less happy....

Below a few of my favorites.

Star Wars Kid 1
Star Wars Kid 2
Star Wars Kid 3
Star Wars Kid Reloaded
Star Wars Kid - Clone Battle

There is many more....

Update: The same story with "The Fat Asian Kid"

Manage your Workload!

Its time to start doing some work! Otherwise we all end up like this poor animal .....
Good Luck!

Campeone, Campeone, Olé, Olé, Olé

The rangers of section 4 have done what they were expected to do. They won the IE world cup. With great effort, beautiful technical actions and tactics carried out with mathematical precision, calculated by some of our quantitative hero's from the first term. Section 3 of the Spanish MBA was humiliated as never seen before. Special thanks to the section 4 supporters who lifted the team to another level.

Viral

A few classes ago we shortly discussed viral marketing. It is basically marketing based on entertaining video's that are so shocking, funny or whatever, that people are sending them around to friends. It is a fast growing online marketing concept.
If you want to learn how to make a viral, consider the Viral Learning Center. It seems to be a pretty good place to learn how to create a viral. LOL!

Do you know.......

That our teacher has his own weblog and surprisingly enough he has a huge amount if traffic to his weblog. So you could assume that he has some interesting things to say. Apparantly not everybody thinks the same. Well I suppose you should decide for yourself and check his wisdome here. (Check his firefox T-shirt)

Rule of 3

I am King Philosophus. Here I am criticizing our class!

I would like to suggest the implementation of a rule that I believe it is important to improve the performance of our classes: It’s called “Rule of 3”.

It was during a conversation with a colleague of us that this rule came up. It is wise. It is proved. It is THE RULE: “Do not talk more than 3 times during a lesson!”. The suggestion is: think on what you really want to say; think again for 5 seconds; then raise you arm and share it with others. There are several advantages associated with this rule: 1) You will put more thought in your comments; 2) You will give a chance for others to speak; 3) The participation of everybody will be more homogeneous; 4) We listen different opinions; 5)…

Let’s share more and different thoughts!
